So much to enjoy.
South Coast is a sprawling, well established winery. It hosts events, has a restaurant, a long list of wines to taste, a hotel and spa. They have 45 varietals planted over 300 acres. They blend their Cabernet with 4 different cabs. The wisteria in bloom in spring is worth the visit.
Things I learned at this winery:
Verdot is used for color and the long finish.
Carménère is used in blending Bordeaux style wines. Deep red wines, the color of crimson. Carménère is a member of the Cabernet family. When young, Carménère leaves have a reddish hue.
Petite Sirah is the name Americans gave to the Durif grape, with over 90% of California plantings labeled Petite Sirah being Durif grapes.
Viognier is a unique grape variety in that it is surprisingly aromatic and perfumes despite being a traditionally dry wine. It is often added as a blend for the fragrance alone.
